Settling Dust

The election is over and now the dust can begin to settle! It is truly a historical day for our country. Barack Obama has been elected president of the United States, the first African-American elected to the country's highest office. All politics aside, while watching the election last night, I couldn't help but feel the magnitude of this event. Whether or not we all agree on his politics or his agenda, I think that we can all appreciate what it means to so many to have a black president. I am hopeful that my children and grandchildren will grow up in a country where race will truly no longer matter.
Yesterday in school Dicie participated in a mock election with her class. When she was describing it to me, and talking about Obama, she couldn't remember his name but described him as "the man with the black hair." Right then, I knew that this next generation really can be different. In our home we don't ever make an issue of the color of a person's skin. We don't even mention skin color. I have been impressed that the children usually don't really mention it. They notice differences in hair or clothing, etc., and point those out MUCH more often that skin color. I hope that means I'm doing my job.
All in all, I don't know what the future holds for this country, but one thing I do know: electing the first black president is a historic event.
