Can We Do It?

Raise your hand if you've ever watched "Bob the Builder."  I'm sure everyone is familiar with Bob and his awesome team, right?!  So when I say, "Can we do it?"  You know the proper response is an enthusiastically harmonious, "Yes we can!"

But if you're a real "Bob the Builder" aficionado, you know that after that resounding, "Yes we can" there's always one apprehensive character that says, "Uh, yes, I think so!"  And that's how I feel about my next goal in life.
Running a 5K

There are a lot of descriptive titles that I might give myself on any given day: Mom, Housekeeper, Chauffer, Photographer, Chocoholic, Wifey, and so on.

At one point in my life, I might have used other descriptives as well: Healthy, Skinny, Active. . .

But never, ever, has the word "RUNNER" even been a part of my personal vocabulary.  Nope. Nada. Never.

The last time I ran any sort of distance worth mentioning was a college gym class and I ran a mile and a half.  It's actually kind of funny because back then I think I could have been a pretty good runner!  I was sorta fast and my endurance was okay, but I was just never interested in pursuing a running "career."  I kept fit in other ways - but mostly by having a high metabolism.  Skinny genes looked good on me.  (Get it, skinny genes?  Come on, that was pretty good...)

Fast forward 10 years and 5 kids.  I try to keep active by walking and with various short-lived fitness programs, but I've always itched to really do something significant.  I've long been wanting to make a real commitment to fitness and my health.

This spring Boise holds the annual Susan G. Komen "Race for the Cure."  I have walked it before now, but this year I want to RUN!  The race is actually on Brett's birthday, so I've convinced him that it would be a lot of fun for us to do it together!

My friend, Jessica H. (you rock!), has transformed her life through running and she has been a real inspiration to me.  She turned me on to the C25K program (Couch-to-5K!) and I think it will work well for me.  I've also read that you can download podcasts that fit with the C25K program.

Now if only I could figure out what the heck a podcast is.

Anyone out there have any tips to help me reach my goal?  Suggestions, encouragement, tips on getting my baby to sleep longer than 2 hours at night?  Ha!

Well, actually I am looking for tips too. My three sisters and I have all made a pact to do that same 5K this year. So when you find them, Please post them. I need all the help I can get!

You go girl!!! You can totally do it. Stay positive. The only tip that has been helpful for me (when I have trained for a race). Is..... try to set the same time during the week to exercise. It is your time and you deserve it (though it may be dreadful at first). Try to find a partner to train with, which is a huge help. Good Luck

Angie, I think that p.e. class we were in was probably the last time I ran any kind of distance at all. Good luck to you!

I can't help with the baby sleeping thing, but this book was especially helpful as I started to run again. It is a run/walk program that helps you build up your endurance. It is challenging, but not so much that you want to give up.

Good luck and keep us posted!

YOU CAN DO IT! I had a similar desire the summer before I turned 30. I was even running in my sleep. I actually miss it, even though I was never a good runner. The furthest was 6 miles. I ran one 5k in Okinawa and it was horribly hot and humid and I thought I would puke! Happy Running!

You rock and I'm so excited to her how it goes for you! I have the same goal, but I haven't posted about it cause I'm still unsure of my own commitment. Here's my tip: breathe! Learn the way to breathe while running and it will change your life! If I can't get my breathing in sync with my steps then I'm toast. Good luck and keep us posted!
